A free, mapped garden crawl just north of Lakeview with private gardens, community spaces, kids activities, workshops, and a mini market.

The Details

The Ravenswood Garden Crawl takes place in Ravenswood, just north of Lakeview, and is one of the easier “leave the neighborhood but still feels local” events.

It’s a free, organized crawl where you explore a mix of private home gardens, RNA’s native parkway gardens, and community spaces using a provided map. You can go self-guided or join a guided tour depending on how structured you want it to be.

This is very much a walking event. The stops are meant to be done on foot, and trying to drive between them will slow you down more than it helps.

The main hub is the RNA info tent at Sunnyside & Ravenswood (west side of the Metra tracks), running 9am–3pm, and this is where a lot of the event activity is centered.

From there, you’ll find:

  • Tours + workshops throughout the day (native gardening, birding, tree care, beekeeping, etc.)
  • a mini market with flowers, local honey, and a garden-themed raffle
  • free wildflower seeds
  • kids crafts + a children’s book reading

Then after the daytime crawl, there’s an optional Happy Hour at Dovetail Brewery from 3–5pm with live music and raffle prizes. It’s a very kid-friendly brewery, so this can be an easy extension of the day if you’re not ready to head home yet.

Why It’s Worth Leaving Lakeview

  • free, but actually has enough programming to fill a morning or afternoon
  • more space and easier pacing than most Lakeview events
  • built-in structure if you want it, flexibility if you don’t
  • easy to turn into a half-day outing without overplanning

Why Kids Like It

  • so many flowers to look at → colors, textures, things to point at the whole time
  • kids crafts + book reading at the main hub
  • free wildflower seeds (easy takeaway win)
  • lots of movement between stops
  • mix of spaces so it doesn’t feel repetitive

Bringing Kids

Very doable, especially if you anchor around the main hub:

  • stroller-friendly between stops
  • easy to stay near Sunnyside/Ravenswood if you don’t want to cover a ton of ground
  • flexible timing depending on naps/energy

The self-guided option is what makes this easiest with younger kids. You can move at your own pace and skip anything that’s not working.

Insider Tips

  • Take the Brown Line to Montrose → short walk and you’re basically at the hub
  • Plan to walk the whole thing → driving between stops won’t work well
  • Start at the info tent → get your bearings and see what’s happening that day
  • Workshops are better for older kids (or adults) → great content, but not something most toddlers will sit through
  • Use the hub as your base → easier than trying to cover the full map
  • Decide ahead of time if you’re doing Dovetail → easy add-on if energy allows

Logistics

  • Hosted by My Ravenswood Neighbors
  • Free to attend

Real Talk

If you base yourself around the hub, hit a workshop, and let your kid do crafts, this actually fills a full morning without needing to overthink it.

And if you still have energy, rolling into Dovetail is a very easy next move.
